English
All work from the fourth year is developed, including the writing of stories, poetry and letters. The pupils are taught to use dictionaries and to develop a clear handwriting pattern. Library skills are also developed throughout the year.
The pupils follow the school reading scheme with the aim of completing the harder texts in the summer term. Children
are encouraged to read from a variety of texts, from school to own choice stories. Drama and classroom discussion
develops confidence in speaking in front of others.

Mathematics
Work is continued in the four main rules. New topics introduced include: decimals, fractions, percentages, long
multiplication, long division, area and perimeter. The pupils learn to use graphs, geometry and clocks in a range of
situations. Data handling is fine-tuned and mental ability is developed through the use of problem solving and mental arithmetic exercises.

Science
Pupils study a range of topics including Space and Life Cycles - Keeping Healthy. Changing state - gases and space. The year's course uses experiments where possible to allow the pupils the chance to learn through planning, recording, observing and problem solving.

History
Pupils study Tudor and Stuart life in detail, starting with the Battle of Bosworth and finishing with Queen Anne.

Geography
The pupils learn about the environment in the UK and around the world. The children are made aware of the climatic
differences around the world. Children cover work on Chile in South America, Scotland, farming. Settlement and environmental geography are also part of the Year five curriculum.

French
Pupils are given the opportunity to develop their French through written, oral and aural techniques. Work extends from year four to allow the children to present information about themselves and to develop a varied vocabulary through the use of a variety of media.

Religious Education
Pupils study a range of different religions from around the world. The pupils are encouraged to understand the
importance of other people's beliefs and customs. A range of media is used throughout the course.

I.C.T.
Building on previous skills - graphical modeling in Excel and an introduction to Excel - using formula. Text and graphics for cross curriculum work. How to use the internet to search for information including the dictionary. Introduction to simple web design using Microsoft word leading on to HTML coding. Use of the digital camera.

Music, Drama, Art and Craft, Physical Education... ...complete the curriculum.
